The original photo used as reference for the mural was photographed by David B. Ewing in 1893.

Fred E. White was born June 8, 1867 in Littleton, Iowa. He was the youngest child of Elizabeth Richmond and Henry White.

His family came to the Seattle in the fall of 1872 and then moved to Fidalgo Island shortly afterwards. The family homesteaded at the head of Fidalgo Bay.

He worked as a jeweler and as a carpenter for most of his life.

Fred was married three times and had 4 sons. He married Addie May Collins in 1892 and they had Ralph Manning White in 1894. He later married Bertha Taggert in 1901. His last marriage was to Edith Trafton in 1907 and they had Harry Eugene White in 1911 and twin boys, James Frederick and John Charles White in 1912 (John passed away at just one day old).

Fred passed away on March 23, 1922 in Anacortes, Washington and is interred at Fernhill Cemetery in Anacortes, Washington.
