Winge's Grocery, 1942-72.

John Earl Winge was born July 13, 1915 in Snohomish, Washington. He was the son on Bertha Gray and William Winge.

His family moved to Anacortes in 1917 and he graduated from Anacortes High School in 1933.

He learned the retail grocery business while working at MacGregor Allen's grocery store on 5th and Commercial and later bought the former Sackett Grocery Store at 10th and "K" Ave. He changed the name to Winge's Community Grocery. Shortly after buying the grocery store, John joined the U.S. Army in 1944. He served as a staff sergeant in Germany after World War II and supervised the rebuilding of roads and bridges while he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The grocery operated for 34 years before John and his wife retired.

John married Marie Anna Nelson in 1937 and had a son and a daughter; John "Jerry" Gerald Winge and Ann Marie Holt. He was a member of the American Legion Post, No. 110 and the Anacortes Church of Christ.

John passed away on April 21, 1989 in Seattle, Washington and is interred at Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes, Washington.

Marie Ann Winge was born February 17, 1916 in Baker Heights, Washington as Marie Ann Nelson. She was the daughter of Anna Marie Peterson and Anton "Tony" Nelson.

She attended the old school at Baker Heights before she went to Seattle to do domestic work. At McFarland Pheasant Farm in Mount Vernon, she met her future husband, John Winge. They operated Winge's Community Store for 34 years in Anacortes.

Marie married John Winge in 1937 and had a son and a daughter: John "Jerry" Gerald Winge and Ann Holt. She was also a member of the Anacortes Church of Christ.

Marie passed away on March 6, 1994 in Anacortes, Washington and is interred at Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes, Washington.
